Magic Moments: Back to Nursery!

As I mentioned in these posts, S's nursery closed for two weeks in August, so we had two weeks at home together.

The last week before the holiday, S was really clingy. She clung to my legs when I dropped her off, and even shed a tear or two when I left her. Until the last day, that is. On the last day she was sitting next to the front door in her sun hat and shoes (still in PJs) half an hour before it was time to go. We ran to nursery, and when we got there, it was all she could do to sit down and let me take her shoes off. I was so relieved that she was happy going to nursery, even looking forward to it.

But then we had the two weeks off, and I was so worried that we'd have to start again from the beginning. I expected crying, clinging, and a fair amount of snot.

Last Tuesday morning, we got up and ready to go. S seemed reasonably happy...

Single Mother Ahoy Back to Nursery
She really is very cute, isn't she!
I tried to prepare her for nursery by saying "ooh, nursery in the morning, you'll get to see S (her keyworker) again" and "wow, nursery this morning, are you looking forward to it?" and "off we go to nursery, you're going to have a great day, I wonder if you'll play with the sand today..."

We got dressed and put her coat on; so far, so good.

Out the door, down the stairs, and walking along the street; so far, so good.

Through the gate into nursery; so far, so good.

Up the stairs to the Ladybird room;; so far, so good.

Shoes off, coat off, bag on peg. Say hello to the staff; so far, so good.

This is the point where I was expecting tears and all sorts.

What actually happened was this: in the door, big smiles for all the staff, shoes off, coat off, bag on peg. Stand up, grab Mummy's hand, drag her over to the ball run, show her how it works. Don't even look up when she kisses me on the head and says goodbye.

It seems we are happy at nursery!

  3. Believe me after spending time worrying outside of a number of nurseries wondering if they'll survive without their mummy I was extremely disappointed (but mostly relieved) to find they 'survived' perfectly well without me and indeed had a brilliant time making new little friends and playing games. I always felt so guilty about leaving them in the care of others but children do need to learn how to socialise and my torturing myself was not a good use of energy. I sympathise though 'cos it is darned hard to walk away when they are crying and clingy :(
